Author Guidelines

Authors are invited to make a submission to this journal. All submissions will be assessed by an editor to determine whether they meet the aims and scope of this journal. Those considered to be a good fit will be sent for peer review before determining whether they will be accepted or rejected.

Before making a submission, authors are responsible for obtaining permission to publish any material included with the submission, such as photos, documents and datasets. All authors identified on the submission must consent to be identified as an author. Where appropriate, research should be approved by an appropriate ethics committee in accordance with the legal requirements of the study's country.

An editor may desk reject a submission if it does not meet minimum standards of quality. Before submitting, please ensure that the study design and research argument are structured and articulated properly. The title should be concise and the abstract should be able to stand on its own. This will increase the likelihood of reviewers agreeing to review the paper. When you're satisfied that your submission meets this standard, please follow the checklist below to prepare your submission.

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • This submission meets the requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • This submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration.
  • All references have been checked for accuracy and completeness.
  • All tables and figures have been numbered and labeled.
  • Permission has been obtained to publish all photos, datasets and other material provided with this submission.

Book Reviews

The Book Reviews section of the Journal of Islamic Sciences (JIS) provides critical and scholarly engagement with significant recent publications in Islamic Studies and related fields. It aims not merely to summarize new books, but to assess their arguments, methodologies, sources, and contributions to contemporary scholarship.

JIS welcomes reviews of important works dealing with the Qurʾān and Sunnah, Islamic intellectual and scientific traditions, theology, philosophy, law and ethics, history, education, civilization, and contemporary issues concerning Islam and Muslim societies. Particular attention is given to books that contribute meaningfully to ongoing scholarly discussions, introduce important primary sources, offer new perspectives on established fields, or address emerging questions of intellectual and civilizational significance.

Reviews should situate the work within its broader scholarly context, identify its principal arguments and contributions, and offer a balanced and constructive critical assessment. Where appropriate, reviewers are encouraged to consider the book's methodology, use of sources, engagement with existing scholarship, and its potential significance for future research.

The journal also welcomes review essays that examine two or more related publications together or use a major new publication as a point of departure for a broader discussion of developments within a particular field.

Publishers and authors interested in having a recent publication considered for review may contact the editorial office. Submission of a book does not, however, guarantee that it will be selected for review.

Extended Book Review up to 2,000 words, with editorial approval
Review Essay (2 or more books) 2,500–4,000 words

Names, email addresses, affiliations, ORCID identifiers, and other information provided through the journal’s online system are used only for legitimate editorial, publishing, and administrative purposes. Users are responsible for providing accurate information and should avoid submitting unnecessary personal or sensitive information through the journal system.
