Through a Dawn-Window: ʿĀshūrāʾ, Hijra, and Ruins

Written from the dawn of ʿĀshūrāʾ 1447, this Shadhrah reflects on how a Qurʾānic heart reads time, place,
memory, and ruin through the Days of Allah. Beginning with ʿĀshūrāʾ as a day of deliverance and trial, it
brings the rescue of Mūsā, upon him peace, the martyrdom of al-Ḥusayn at Karbala, and the Hijra into
conversation with contemporary images of devastation in Darʿā. A remembered family journey to
Samarqand then provides a counter-register of beauty, transmission, and Muslim belonging. Together, Darʿā
and Samarqand become sites through which grief and gratitude, fear and hope, ruin and memory are held
within a Qurʾānic vision of history. The essay argues that Muslim formation requires learning to read the
world through revelation: time contains the Days of Allah, places carry moral memory, and education must
give the child a compass by which knowledge regains its qibla. Its central image is Madīna—not merely as a
city reached by Hijra, but as a community made radiant through revelation, worship, brotherhood, law,
mercy, sacrifice, and disciplined formation. The Shadhrah concludes at dawn with a prayer that the ruins of
the Umma become places of return and that its children become bearers of light.
