Engaging New Muslim Evolutionists—Part II

Abstract

This Shadhrah critically examines the arguments and methodologies of contemporary Muslim advocates of evolution, focusing on the theological implications of reconciling Darwinian evolution with the Islamic understanding of creation. It argues that evolutionary accounts of human origins conflict with foundational Islamic doctrines concerning the special creation and Prophethood of Ādam, upon him peace, the creation of ʿĪsā, upon him peace, human fiṭra, angelic agency, the Hereafter, and the primordial covenant between humanity and Allah. Drawing upon the Qurʾān, Hadith, and the Islamic intellectual tradition, the article maintains that the debate extends beyond biological origins to fundamental questions of epistemology, cosmology, and the nature and purpose of the human being. It further situates contemporary Muslim evolutionary thought within the intellectual assumptions of modern Western science and calls for a renewed engagement with Islamic creedal, philosophical, and spiritual traditions when addressing questions of human origins and modern evolutionary theory.
