Ibn Sīnā and Abū al-Barakāt al-Baghdādī on the Origination of the Soul (Ḥudūth al-nafs) and the Invalidation of its Transmigration (ibṭāl al-tanāsukh)

Abstract

This article presents a comparative survey of Ibn Sīnā and Abū al-Barakāt’s views on the problem of the orig- ination of the soul and its transmigration (tanāsukh) and contrasts their arguments and interpretations. The article identifies similarities and differences in the views of these two scholars, both of whom be- lieved in and argued for the origination of the soul and rejected its transmigration, with particular fo- cus on the way they differ in defining their views.
